The World Comes to Jeju...And Jeju Goes to the World

Posted on 12:22 by mohit
So we just got back from the glorious Jeju Island, famed for its "stone, women, and wind." And it did not disappoint. Jeju is basically Warren's and my dream come true--it's like RoadsideAmerica, Korean style. Our most heroic move was renting a car, which Warren drove like a champ.

One of the first things that caught our eye after we left the Loveland (yes, seriously) parking lot was a feisty little statue park starring imps like him:

We visited an ancient nutmeg forest and took the obligatory heart shaped rock photo to add to our growing collection:
And of course we had to pull over to check out the roe deer wonderland. Warren was definitely a deer whisperer:
One of our goals was to eat some of the famed black pig, which we did with gusto:
Though afterwards we saw one of the little guys alive and kickin' and felt some remorse...though not too much (that pig is as tasty as it is ADORABLE):
Not to worry, we also visited some of the normal things, like the gorgeous Cheonjiyeon waterfall, home of the mottled eel:
We climbed Sunrise Peak--TWICE (the first time was too misty to see much):
And, as if to prove Jeju's magical powers, we were finally able to see the end of a rainbow:
Last but not least, we devoured some sea cucumber freshly picked (and slaughtered) by the island's amazing haenyo, or women divers:
When I grow up, I want to be just like her:

I've Got Seoul But I'm Not A Soldier

Posted on 04:50 by mohit
We just got back from a little jaunt to Gyeongju--home of the former Shilla kingdom (which lasted 1,000 years) and tons of tombs--and Haein-sa, an absolutely glorious Buddhist temple tucked way up in the mountains. Needless to say, we hiked a whole lot. But the views were so worth it.

Besides the busloads of screaming schoolkids, the temples were literally awesome. Seeing the epic views around us made me understand why so many people seeking sacred experiences head to a mountain. Not that we were wholly on the holy side, which we sadly prove in the following photos of me being an Asian tourist and Warren guarding the gates...

But Warren and I felt right at home with our chatty octogenarian bus mates (60+ being our demographic of choice for most of our dates).

To prove this point, Warren really wanted to join a game of goh (when we returned to Seoul, we stumbled across this park filled with old men and goh boards--very cool)

We're back in Seoul for the next few days and so far it's been amazing. We're staying in a great little neighborhood called Insadong. Here are a few of my favorite random street moments:

1) Silk Worms + French Fries. Why not, right?
2) Hello Kitty street in Hongdae, complete with its own pink cafe!
3) A bouquet of plastic pigs? You shouldn't have!
4) One of these things is not like the other...

5) Farm scene in the middle of the city

And just FYI, waffles are HUGE right now, though not as huge as Warren's delight...

Basically, we <3 Seoul!

Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?!

Posted on 04:19 by mohit
And by "Carmen San Diego," I mean "Warren and Amy" (but please sing our names to the hit TV show's melody). Anyway, I'll give you a few hints:

And I'm pretty sure that this will help a great deal:
You bet your bottom dollar: we're in KOREA!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!! And it is amazing. Exhibit A: Lantern Festival in honor of Buddha's birthday with our new friend Cindy:
Obviously the Lantern Fest had some real classy photo ops:
And an absolutely stunning temple:
We've had some truly magical moments. For instance, smiling in a completely inappropriate way whilst standing next to a DMZ guard (note his "Modified Tae Kwan Do Stance" that could probably destroy a whole country if said country got too close to his shiny sunglasses).
And posing in another inappropriately lighthearted way with the theme park-esque DMZ sign:
But for real, Korea is magical. I mean, just take a look at where we get to sleep (a traditional house, or hanok):
And visiting the seriously lovely Seoul LDS Temple:
And of course, there's always our seamless way of blending in with the locals:
We are currently exploring a marvelous island and will update you with all the details tomorrow! Until then, lots of love from Korea! (And just because I'm feeling flirty, here is a quick sneak peak):

Can you feel the awesome?

BabyLand: Where Dreams Come True

Posted on 12:22 by mohit
Babyland General Hospital, AKA the birth place (literally) of the Cabbage Patch Kids, is the stuff that dreams are made of...if your dreams are seriously freaky/hilarious. BabyLand is where you can witness a teenage boy deliver a baby doll from "Mother Cabbage." True story. As true as Goats On A Roof, a literal general store in Georgia where goats, like, live on a roof. Just one of the magical things you can see on your way to BabyLand.

Georgia is astounding.

Anyway, the following video clip is an older version of what Warren and I witnessed last summer in Cleveland, Georgia, but the script hasn't changed one iota. And yes, this is a video of a "Cabbage" "giving birth" to a doll. Amazing.

Long story short, I say this all to introduce the newest issue of the Southern Review, where you can find my essay "BabyLand." The whole issue is dedicated to the glory that is Americana. Needless to say, it's pretty cool. Super huge thanks to Jeanne Leiby and Cara Blue Adams--the talented, gracious, and all around lovely editors of SR!

Of Mountains, Rags, Birthdays, and Easter

Posted on 17:19 by mohit
It's Final's Week here in Buena Vista and to celebrate, I had my students over for their final exam (which, for creative writing classes, means a class party!). My students gave wonderful readings of their essays and we stuffed ourselves silly. Here are the remnants--and what basically became my afternoon tea.

Which turned into an afternoon drive (Final's Week = No class = Mini vacation!) down our favorite stretch of road in these parts, the glorious Blue Ridge Parkway.

We pulled over and read (which Warren studiously did)...

Whereas I opted to nap...

Though I eventually got around to reading (Marguerite Duras' gorgeous The Lover and Virgina Woolf's To the Lighthouse)

This is what we're leaving, folks. Tragic.

In other news, we hopped up to DC this weekend. Trish and I embarked on an epic craft day that would rival any Super Saturday. We call it The Rag Rug OF DOOM. Friends, that braid at Trish's feet goes on FOREVER.

We celebrated the fabulous Chelsea's birthday. Complete with Costco chocolate cake. Does life get better?

And of course, what Easter weekend would be complete without some good ol' fashioned egg dying. Here's Warren coaching our nephew, Isaac, on the fine art of ombre.

How about you, friends? How are you celebrating spring and all its wonderfulness?
